Georgetown Univ., FDA to Partner on Regulatory Science

Georgetown University (SergeMelki/Flickr)Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Rockville, Maryland signed a new agreement to encourage research and education in the fields of regulation and public health. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed today covers regulatory science, ethics, education, and training.

The five-year agreement is expected to encourage research and public health activities in new technologies, public health preparedness, ethics, and bioinformatics. Under the agreement, FDA and GUMC can share labs, equipment, and office space.

The MOU promotes scientific staff exchanges and professional development opportunities, including selected FDA staff serving as adjunct faculty in teaching and clinical activities at GUMC. The program also includes mentorship of doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows in collaborative research relevant to FDA’s mission.

Under the agreement, staff at GUMC are expected to take part in research with counterparts at FDA. Any patentable discoveries resulting from their joint research will be subject to the Bayh-Dole Act, if financed by a federal grant or contract, or covered under terms of a supplementary agreement.
