Pfizer Inc. in New York says University of California, San Diego Health Sciences will join the company’s network of translation research partnerships called Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI). The company’s CTI partnerships now include life science research institutions in Massachusetts and New York, as well as California.

Pfizer says it expects to spend some $50 million over the next five years on the UC San Diego partnership. The company plans to support pre-clinical and clinical research programs at the university and provide milestone payments for mutually agreed-upon drug candidates.

Pfizer says it will provide access to some of its antibody libraries and technologies, as well as resources and support from the company’s experts in drug development and protein sciences. Pfizer also expects to provide dedicated lab space at the company’s La Jolla research and development campus for joint studies by scientists from Pfizer and UC San Diego.

In June, eight Massachusetts research institutions joined CTI, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston University School of Medicine, Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard University, Partners HealthCare, Tufts Medical Center, Tufts University, and University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

In January, CTI added seven research institutions in New York: Rockefeller University, NYU Langone Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Mount Sinai Medical Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Pfizer began the CTI collaborations in November 2010 with University of California, San Francisco.
