Clemson University in Greenville, South Carolina has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for a research and education program in sustainable vehicle systems. The program will be part of Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research.

The new program at Clemson aims to overcome barriers in the design and development of high energy-efficiency and low environmental-impact vehicle propulsion systems by integrating graduate education and research. Clemson says demand for its automotive engineering classes has expanded reently, with a graduate student enrollment now reaching 135 participants.

The grant, from the Energy Department’s Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) division, establishes a “center of excellence” at Clemson. GATE centers are expected to be supported by industry, with funding for internships, shared research facilities and equipment, research contracts, and fellowships.

The five-year GATE funding is expected to support both curriculum development and laboratory work, resulting in multidisciplinary training fr students. The program aims to promote development of an engineering workforce that can help commercialize the next generation of advanced automotive technologies.
