GSK, Nottinghan Univ. to Collaborate on Green Chemistry

Jubilee Campus (Univ. of Nottingham)

The BBC is reporting that the global drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will build a new lab at the University of Nottingham in the U.K. for research and education in cleaner and safer chemistry processes. The proposal is expected to be presented first as a proof-of-concept in 2011, for construction at the University’s Jubilee Campus, one mile from the main campus.

The laboratory facility, according to the university, will support academic teaching and encourage related research and development in chemistry addressing issues such as sustainability, energy, and health care. Students are expected to use the lab to conduct research projects as part of their undergraduate programs, focusing on development of green chemistry methodologies.

The building will also aim to be climate-neutral, serving as a prototype for similar projects elsewhere in the world. Conventional research and development laboratory facilities have a high demand for energy. The new lab, with a capacity of 60 researchers, is expected to generate its own energy, and be built of materials that minimize CO2 emissions.

In October, the university and GSK launched a training partnership to give Nottingham undergraduates first-hand experience in drug discovery, and introduce chemistry students to the medicinal chemistry skills used in the pharmaceutical industry.
