A new start up company has licensed advanced polymers research at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to commercialize polymer technology. PolymerPlus LLC, in nearby Valley View, plans to work with some of the intellectual property developed at the university’s Center for Layered Polymeric Systems (CLiPS).

PolymerPlus will seek out specific applications for multilayered materials and conduct the research and development to commercialize those applications. Polymer films made of varying, thin (nano- and micro-scale) layers can produce unique benefits, in fields such as optics and electronics.

In the optics field, PolymerPlus has obtained an exclusive license to develop CLiPS gradient refractive index (GRIN) lens technology. This technology is part of a multi-million dollar development program expected to result in pilot-scale GRIN lens production for strategic lightweight imaging and energy collection devices.

CLiPS is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Science and Technology Center. These centers are formed by NSF to conduct innovative, potentially transformative, complex research through partnerships among academic institutions, national labs, and industry.
