7 September 2018. Global warming and environmental issues are a complex and pretty huge thing. So as a small business owner, it can be easy to see why you might think that only large companies need to be concerned with this kind of thing, and rightly so. But while they do have a large impact, global warming and environmental issues are everybody’s business, and as a small business owner, should be something that you are doing too. When many people and businesses make take some small steps and actions to change, amazing things can happen. Small steps are not insignificant at all.

As well as doing something good for the environment, it can also be a good thing for your business. Making a business that is more environmentally-friendly can help you to appeal to customers, as more and more of them will be looking to shop with brands or businesses that are trying to do better. We are much more aware now than we have ever been, so ignorance is not an excuse.

So if this sounds like something that you want to do for your business, then here are some steps that you can take to make sure that your business is ‘greener’ and doing its bit for the environment.

Conserve water

You can not only save money, but reduce your business impact on the environment when you save money. Small steps like fixing a tap that is leaking can make a massive difference to how much water your business wastes. You could look for a plumber to assess your water usage, or even look for somewhere like SESL consultants as they could do an environmental impact assessment on your business. It is a small step that can make a difference and help you to make practical changes as a result.

Get involved with cycling

Unless your employees live within walking distance of their workplace, they will have a commute to do. And the impact that many people have, traveling to work alone, has on the pollution in the environment is pretty high. So to encourage employees to carpool or to even cycle to work, it is a good idea to get involved in a cycle to work scheme. There are some government incentives that you could look into, as well as partnering with local bike shops to get discounts for your staff if they need a new bike or repairs.

Recycling

Recycling can feel like such a broad term, as there are many aspects to it. But there are plenty of things that your business can do to get recycling. It could be the recycling of energy, as well as if the products that you use. It is a good idea to switch to mugs rather than paper cups in the office, as well as looking to recycle things like coffee grounds as they can be used as fertilizer. All it takes is doing a few things a little differently and it will make a difference to the environment, and your business.
