1 December 2018. Today is World AIDS Day, set aside each year to call attention the continuing danger from the disease and HIV infections responsible for it. HIV infections and AIDS are subjects we cover regularly on Science & Enterprise — see links below — mainly scientific advances and business activity putting the science into action.

While much attention is focused on the continuing AIDS and HIV crisis in Africa, countries in Eastern Europe are also facing growing numbers of HIV infections, according to new data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and World Health Organization, and presented this week by our friends at Statista. This weekend’s infographic shows the highest rate of HIV infections in Europe is in Russia, followed by Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova, all with 20 or more HIV diagnoses per 100,000 people.

The data, from 2017, also show the lowest HIV infection rates are found in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, and Slovakia, all with fewer than 2 cases per 100,000 people.
