FDA Approves Improved Laser Eye Surgery Technology

Eyes closeup (Paleontour/Flickr)The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an enhanced technology for refractive (laser) eye surgery, based on research conducted at University of Rochester in New York. The Rochester Nomogram, as the technology is called, is licensed to Technolas Perfect Vision, a cataract and refractive laser company formed through a joint venture of lens manufacturer Bausch + Lomb, also in Rochester, and 20/10 Perfect Vision AG in Munich, Germany.

The Nomogram was first created and tested at Rochester five years ago by eye surgeon Scott MacRae working with Manoj Venkiteshwar, then a post-doctoral researcher. The technology addresses problems patients undergoing refractive surgery encounter that leave many of them slightly far-sighted, although their vision is nearly always 20/20 or better.

MacRae and Venkiteshwar created a complex formula that helps physicians better understand how refractive surgery affects a patient’s eyesight. The Nomogram adjusts the way a laser interacts with the patient’s vision, reducing the chances that the patient’s eyes will be near-sighted or far-sighted after the procedure. The technology also increases the eye’s ability to see in situations where there is low light or little contrast.

The FDA approved an advanced form of the Nomogram for refractive surgery to address nearsightedness and astigmatism. Technolas Perfect Vision says the advanced Nomogram improves the predictability of the laser surgery results, as well as reduces the potential need for a second enhancement procedure.
