Dell Inc. to Open Silicon Valley R&D Center

Integrated circuits (Tambako/Flickr)Dell Inc., a computer manufacturer in Round Rock, Texas announced plans to open a new research and development center in in California’s Silicon Valley. The company says the new Santa Clara facility is expected to grow to 1,500 employees over the next five years.

The Dell Silicon Valley Research and Development Center will focus on networking design and development, storage development, and cloud (Internet-based services) computing. The center will also be used for engineering, sales and marketing, and service functions.

While Dell expects to hire additional staff for the facility, the number of new jobs created is uncertain. A major objective of the center is to combine the current operations of several area companies in the region that Dell has acquired: Zing, Ocarina, Scalent, and Everdream.

The 240,000 square foot facility will be occupied in phases beginning with 700 employees in the second half of this year.
