10 July 2021. Venture capital financing broke global records in the second quarter of 2021, with investments in the U.S. accounting for nearly half of all dollars invested. Technology intelligence company CB Insights published its findings yesterday in its State of Venture Q2’21 report (free registration required).

CB Insights says in the April to June quarter of 2021, venture investors placed $156.2 billion in companies with 7,751 deals throughout the world. That’s 15 percent more than the $136.2 billion invested in the first quarter and more than two-and-a-half times as much as the $60.7 billion invested in the second quarter of 2020. Of that amount, investments in U.S. companies totaled $70.4 billion, also a quarterly record and 45 percent all global investment dollars, in 2,718 deals. Venture investments in Asian companies totaled $42.4 billion in 2,577 deals, while 1,821 European venture deals totaled $30.6 billion.

Investments in Chinese companies totaled $22.8 billion, more than double the $11.2 billion invested in the second quarter of 2020. That Q2 2021 total however is 18 percent less than the record-setting $27.7 billion invested in Chinese enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The year 2021 could easily smash all annual venture funding records. In the first half of 2021, venture investors placed $292.4 billion in 15,277 deals, not far from the total of $302.6 billion invested for all of 2020, the annual global venture funding record in 25,801 deals. Mega-round deals, those of $100 million or more, make up more than half (58%) of all worldwide investments.
