11 Dec. 2021. The world has learned a lot about vaccines since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as gaining a peek inside the pharmaceutical business. But as the business research company Statista displayed this week in a chart, vaccines make up a small part of the pharma industry overall, even after the sizable jump in vaccine sales this year.

Statista compiled the data for its Health Market Outlook report, a paid item, which includes a section on the global pharmaceuticals market. The report shows pharma sales volumes this year are expected to exceed $1 trillion worldwide. Yet despite sales for vaccines more than doubling in just one year, vaccine sales are expected to reach $89 billion this year, only about eight percent of total revenues industry-wide.

The report indicates drug makers make far more income from sales of products that treat chronic disorders than vaccines to prevent disease. Statista says sales of cancer drugs are projected to bring in more than $175 billion this year, while drugs for diabetes and inflammatory diseases are each expected to generate about $55 billion in sales.
