10 Sept. 2022. The smart watch is emerging as a key data collection tool for monitoring day-to-day health of individuals and for health care research. Smart watches offer many functions, but because they’re worn on the wrist, watches can read several vital signs, connect with Bluetooth to phones for initial processing, and relay the data to the cloud for collection and analysis.

Data published by market analysis company Counterpoint Research in March, and charted this week by business data company Statista, show Apple with the leading market share for smart watches by a wide margin. According to Counterpoint, three in 10 new devices shipped in 2021 (30%) were made by Apple, with Samsung a distant second at 10 percent. Several other watches on the market each record eight percent of sales or less.

Counterpoint also reports smart watch sales overall grew by 24 percent from 2020 to 2021. But in that year, Apple’s share of the market dropped from one-third (33%) to 30 percent. In addition, Samsung’s market share from 2020 to 2021 grew slightly from 9 to 10 percent, while Huawei’s share dropped from 10 to 8 percent.
