The Philips Healthcare Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center, a collaboration of Philips Healthcare and Case Western Reserve University hospitals and medical center in Cleveland, has received $2.6 million in two grants from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission. The Philips Healthcare imaging center conducts clinical research, development, and commercialization of medical imaging technologies.

The larger ($1.6 million) grant will fund development of an imaging product to help emergency room physicians make more definitive diagnoses and treatment decisions for heart attack patients. The research team will explore the use of cardiac perfusion technology that measures the amount of blood in the heart muscle at rest and during exercise.

The new system will aim to provide a detailed assessment of areas of the heart which are not getting enough blood or to find out how much heart muscle has been damaged. The system is expected to build on current computed tomography (CT) technology made by Philips Healthcare in Cleveland.

The second grant of about $1 million to develop a new system that provides enhanced resolution of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans used to detect breast cancer through CT or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) imaging. Researchers will explore if this combination of imaging technologies can enhance the ability to more accurately detect breast cancer. MRI and PET are expected to provide complementary capabilities to better visualize both functional and anatomical information.

The need for a better imaging technology is a result of potential false positive results of breast cancer from MRI alone when detecting benign abnormalities. Combining MRI images with PET, however, may enhance the ability to detect malignant areas. This greater resolution can help physicians improve surgical planning and monitoring of the disease.

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission is a state-funded agency providing financial support for applied research and commercialization of innovative technologies leading to economic growth. Third Frontier grants require matching funds, being provided by the Philips Healthcare imaging center partners.
