$40K Challenge Seeks High-Speed Missing Food Finder

Stacks of cafeteria trays (John Lester/Flickr)A new challenge on InnoCentive seeks a method or process of identifying trays with missing food servings in a system where servings are delivered to trays one at a time at high speeds. The competition has a prize of $40,000 and a deadline of 2 January 2012 for submissions.

InnoCentive in Waltham, Massachusetts is a company that conducts open-innovation crowd-sourcing competitions for corporate and organization sponsors. The sponsor of this challenge is not identified.

This challenge seeks a way of identifying trays of food with missing servings. The trays move at high speed down a line where the servings are delivered one at a time. The desired solution can identify the trays with missing items either during the distribution process or at the end. Solutions for the problem can use optical or gravimetric technologies, but systems based on other technologies will be considered.

Submissions require a written proposal that will be reviewed by the sponsor. To receive the challenge award, entrants will need to transfer exclusive intellectual property (IP) rights to the sponsor. However, the sponsor will consider a licensing arrangement in exchange for a partial award if IP rights cannot be transferred.
