The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) has drafted a new strategic plan and seeks comments on the draft from the nanotech community. The comment period ends on 30 November 2010.

The National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Plan, according to NNI, is the framework that guides the nanotechnology work of the 25 NNI member agencies. Its purpose is to encourage achievement of the NNI vision by laying out guidance for agency leaders, program managers, and the research community on plans and implementation of nanotechnology R&D investments and activities.

The plan presents the NNI high-level goals and priorities and specific objectives for at least the next three years. It describes NNI’s four main goals, the major program areas to track the investments needed to ensure NNI’s success, and the near-term steps taken toward achieving NNI’s vision and goals. The plan also describes interagency activities, including what NNI calls its “signature initiatives” that are designed to accelerate innovation in high priority areas.

NNI has already sought reviews from President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and the National Research Council of the National Academies. The group also held a workshop in July and issued a request for information in July and August that generated more ideas.

NNI has set up a separate portal for viewing and commenting on the plan. Free registration is required to submit comments.
