Amyris Inc., a developer of renewable materials through synthetic biology in Emeryville, California said it has signed a collaboration and joint development agreement with Firmenich, a maker of fragrances and flavors in Geneva, Switzerland. This is the first agreement for Amyris in the fragrance and flavor industry.

Firmenich will fund Amyris’s development of a sustainable and reliable source for an as-yet identified ingredient for the fragrance and flavor market. Under the agreement, Amyris will also manufacture and supply the product to Firmenich for marketing and distribution, and the parties will share the proceeds.

The agreement also grants worldwide exclusive commercialization rights in fragrance and flavor to Firmenich for the Amyris manufactured ingredients. In addition, the agreement gives Firmenich an option to collaborate with Amyris on a second engineered ingredient.
