Commerce Dept. Makes Science-Tech Commercialization Awards

Six U.S. technology R&D organizations are the winners of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s i6 Challenge, a competition of ideas for technology commercialization and entrepreneurship.  Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announced the winners today at an event on regional innovation clusters co-hosted by The Brookings Institution.

The i6 Challenge identifies the nation’s best ideas for technology commercialization and entrepreneurship in six different regions of the country. The winners from each region will receive $1 million from Department of Commerce to support their project and may be eligible for additional awards from National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.

The winning projects include …

The Global Center for Medical Innovation in Atlanta, Georgia will implement three initiatives to accelerate the development and commercialization of new medical devices and technology.

The New Mexico Technology Ventures Corporation in Albuquerque will develop an infrastructure for the maturation of technologies developed under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program into commercially viable enterprises.

A consortium of University of Akron Research Foundation, Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron, and Innovative Solutions for Invention Xceleration will reduce the time from needed ideas to commercialization of new technologies by bringing together scientists, physicians, engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs in the biomedical device/product and polymer science industries of northeast Ohio.

A consortium of seven St. Louis, Missouri academic, business, and research organizations will advance bioscience technology commercialization through collaborative translational research, company creation, and first funding, and build an entrepreneurial infrastructure around the needs of bioscience firms and investors.

Innovation Works Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania will create the Agile Innovation System, to accelerate the commercialization of technologies being developed in the region’s universities and small businesses.

The Oregon Translational Research and Drug Development Institute, the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute, and the Oregon Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies Center are joining forces to create the Oregon Innovation Cluster. The groups say this new entity will be the first to address gaps in the commercialization continuum for the three broad industry/technology sectors.
