NIH Seeking Small Business Proposals for HazMat Training

Hazmat workers (Linda Bartlett, National Cancer Institute)

(Linda Bartlett, National Cancer Institute)

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) wants ideas from small businesses for using advanced technology to train HazMat workers and emergency responders to better protect themselves and their communities from hazardous materials. NIEHS, part of National Institutes of Health, has issued a funding announcement seeking applications under the Small Business Innovation Research program.

The products from these awards would complement NIEHS’s Worker Education and Training Program that aims to prevent work-related harm by helping train workers exposed to potentially harmful substances. For this purpose, NIEHS needs learning and training technologies that are field tested, and applicable to real-world situations. Companies selected for this work would develop advanced technologies to improve worker preparedness through safety and health training for workers engaged in hazardous-materials response.

NIEHS expects to make three to five project awards totaling $575,000 in fiscal year 2011 that begins 1 October 2010. Letters of intent are due by 8 August 2010, with full proposals due on 8 September 2010.
