University-Business Partners Get Grant for Energy Project

MTECH Laboratories in Ballston Spa, New York has received a Small Business Innovation Research grant from National Science Foundation to demonstrate the feasibility of its energy distribution system for large buildings. The grant funds joint research and development on power distribution with the nearby College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering of the University at Albany, and EYP/energy, a division of the design firm EYP Architecture and Engineering, also in Albany.

The project will focus on energy distribution in large complex structures housing enterprises such as semiconductor manufacturers, hospitals, and large data centers. These facilities often face problems associated with high power use and cooling.

MTECH Laboratories says it has considerable experience at electrical distribution systems based on superconductors and cryogenic (low-temperature) power conversion technologies. These devices convert power from direct current sources such as solar cells, fuel cells and batteries to conventional 60-Hz AC power.
