Sygenta, in Basel, Switzerland says it will build a new biotechnology research facility adjacent to its current campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The $71 million facility is expected to be operational in the second half of 2012.

The company says the new labs will focus on discovering and developing new genetic characteristics for crops grown by its worldwide agricultural customers. Sandro Aruffo, Syngenta’s research and development chief says the technologies implemented at the site “will accelerate our R&D efforts to develop agronomic traits that will enable crops to better withstand complex environmental challenges.”

The site is expected to conduct research on traits that can better tolerate climate variability, combat plant stresses such as drought, and enhance crop productivity and plant performance. Sygenta says it plans to expand its focus to sugar cane, cereals, rice, and vegetables, from its current concentration on corn and soybeans.

In addition to labs, the facility is expected to have greenhouses, and what it calls “precision growth chambers.” The company did not disclose the number of employees or new hires anticipated at the new site.
