Group to Develop Cell Therapy Industry Standards

The International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) in Vancouver, Canada has rechartered an industry committee to develop standards for business processes that lead to late-stage clinical trials. ISCT expects larger health care and pharmaceutical companies to participate in this group.

According to Ed Horwitz, M.D., President of ISCT, the group — called the ISCT Industry Task Force — will “develop standards around cell characterization and potency as well as treatment approaches and trial endpoint design.” Horwitz added, “We aim to facilitate entry into the cell therapy space for large health care and pharmaceutical companies, those members of the industry most reliably able to initiate and maintain advanced phase clinical trials.”

Companies that signed up for the committee include Roche, Genzyme, Athersys, Miltenyi Biotec, Hospira, Lonza, and Life Technologies. In addition to standards, the committee plans to hold discussions of shared concerns on process and product development, business models, and clinical development.
