Financing deals, 8 July 2010

Calithera Biosciences in South San Francisco, California today announced completion of a Series A financing totaling $40 million. Series A financing involves early sale of stock to external investors, after initial seed capital. Morgenthaler Ventures led the financing with U.S. Venture Partners, Advanced Technology Ventures, Delphi Ventures and Mission Bay Capital taking part. Calithera Biosciences plans to use the funds to develop activators of caspases, the proteases that promote apoptotic cell death, for the treatment of cancer and other proliferative diseases.

Environmental Operating Solutions Inc. (EOSi) in Bourne, Massachusetts announced $3.5 million in new venture capital financing to support a key new product. The funding is provided by existing investor Stuart Mill Venture Partners joined by new institutional investors MidPoint Food & Ag Fund and Meidlinger Partners. EOSi makes water purification products for wastewater treatment facilities. The investment will be used for the company’s line of non-hazardous, agriculturally-derived carbon sources for biological contaminant removal.
