State Grant Awarded for Solar Energy Storage R&D

Solar flare (Temari 09/Flickr)SunPower Corp. in San Jose, California has received a $1.8 million grant from the California Public Utilities Commission to research photovoltaic (PV) energy storage for large commercial applications.

The grant, awarded from the the California Solar Initiative Research, Development, Deployment and Demonstration program, will establish a pilot program to demonstrate the integration of energy storage systems with current PV units for commercial customers. Three energy storage companies — Ice Energy, Xtreme Power, and ZBB Energy — will partner with SunPower on this project.

SunPower also plans to enlist a major retailer to demonstrate the economic and operational benefits of combining PV with each of the partners’ storage devices. The California Solar Initiative’s goal is to create 1,940 megawatts of new, solar-produced electricity by 2016.
