The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York received a World Bank contract to perform laboratory testing of LED-based, off-grid lighting products. The LED-based lights are developed for Lighting Africa, a joint initiative between the World Bank and International Finance Corporation.

Over the next 18 months, the LRC will lab test light emitting diode (LED) off-grid lighting products, in particular solar-charged LED lights. The tests will also cover lighting systems with various charging systems and energy storage technologies. The tests will evaluate the products on a number of performance and reliability criteria.

The World Bank plans to use the results of LRC’s tests to provide feedback to manufacturers and institutional buyers for the region, and they may also encourage development of a lighting quality seal recognizable by consumers as part of the Lighting Africa strategy.

Lighting Africa, a joint IFC and World Bank program, seeks to accelerate the development of commercial off-grid lighting markets in Sub-Saharan Africa as part of the World Bank’s efforts to improve access to energy. According to the group, its strategy supports market development, provides technical advisory services to quality oriented companies, and protects the interests of low-income consumers.
