California Nanoparticle Ink Developer in Solar Cell Deal

Slar flare (Temari 09/Flickr)Innovalight, in Sunnyvale, California, will supply its silicon ink based on nanotechnology for JA Solar, a Chinese manufacturer of high-efficiency solar energy cells. The two companies will also co-develop solar cells that promise higher power-conversion efficiency.

JA Solar has pilot tested Innovalight’s silicon ink since May 2010. Full commercial production is expected to begin later this year, with Innovalight supplying the ink for three years.

The silicon-based ink developed by Innovalight is comprised of nanoparticles immersed in chemicals that the company says are environmentally friendly. The company also offers a process for applying the ink to existing solar cell manufacturing lines.

Innovalight says its silicon nanoparticle ink and manufacturing process can boost the efficiency of basic solar power cells by up to 19 percent. The planned joint development with JA Solar aims to produce new solar cells with conversion efficiencies exceeding 20 percent.
