12 Sept. 2020. The Times Higher Education released its 2021 global university rankings, with the the leaders going to institutions in the U.S. and U.K. A chart published this week by the business research company Statista displays the top eight universities, our infographic for this weekend.

University of Oxford claims the top spot, followed by Stanford, Harvard, Cal Tech, MIT, Cambridge, University of California in Berkeley, and Yale. Ninth and tenth places, not on the chart, went to Princeton and University of Chicago. The top-ranked European university is ETH Zurich in Switzerland in 14th place, and the leading Chinese institution is Tsinghua University, tied for 20th place with Duke University.

The rankings cover more than 1,500 universities in 93 countries, based on 13 indicators covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. Data for the rankings come from an analysis of more than 80 million citations in 13 million research publications, and survey responses from 22,000 scholars worldwide.
